About

Why Function
& Forge exists

A small practitioner led clinic founded by someone who seemed to spend as much time rehabilitating his injuries as playing sport.

Sport came first: rugby, football, cricket and athletics, together with the injuries and setbacks that inevitably accumulated along the way.

Later, after taking up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I broke my arm badly enough to need surgery. Rehabilitating it changed the way I thought about injury. The question became more than simply when I could return. It became how I could rebuild well, what I could learn from the process and what I might do differently afterwards.

That thinking became the foundation for Built for Comebacks.

It also created a genuine curiosity about anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation and why bodies respond the way they do. That curiosity led to formal sports massage and sports therapy education and, eventually, to Function & Forge.

My professional background spans law and senior level recruitment. They are very different environments from a treatment room, but the skills transfer surprisingly well: listening carefully, asking useful questions, working through complex information and helping someone understand the options in front of them.

How it works in practice

Understand the problem. Agree the next step.

Expect a practitioner who takes time over the problem, explains his thinking as he goes, involves you in the plan and tells you what the next step is.

If another professional is better placed to help, I’ll explain why and, where possible, help point you in the right direction.
